Technical consumer goods in Egypt: six of the seven sectors increased

The Egyptian telecommunications, consumer electronics, major domestic appliances, small domestic appliances, office equipment and consumables and information technology sectors recorded solid results in Q3 2014, according to the data published by GfK Temax. The sales value generated between July and September 2014 increased to EGP 9,657 billion, compared to the same period last year, representing an increase of 17%.

Major domestic appliances: a promising third quarter
In the MDA sector, a total sales volume of EGP 3.5 billion was generated between July and September 2014. This represented a rise of 2.7%, compared to Q3 2013. Freezers, microwave ovens and built-in hobs recorded double-digit growth (in terms of value) in Q3 2014.

Small domestic appliances: a good quarter
The SDA sector achieved a sales volume of EGP 554 million in Q3 2014, which represented an increase of 4.6%, when compared to Q3 2013. Positive sales were generated in the shavers, irons, electric heating, electric fans and exhaust fans segments, in comparison with Q3 2013.

Consumer electronics: CE market slightly recovered after a slow Q2
Turnover in the CE sector reached EGP 1 billion during Q3 2014, showing a 6% increase, compared to Q2 2014. The TVs segment was at the center of this growth, accounting for EGP 900 million. The trend for large-screen TVs (with smart TV and 3D functionalities) helped the overall market to register an increase. Elsewhere, there was a drop in sales ratios – mainly in the market for CRT-TVs, which fell by 45%, compared to Q2 2014.

Telecommunications: a significant 2014
In Q3 2014, the telecommunications sector recorded a total sales volume in excess of EGP 3.5 billion. These values represented a 39% growth rate, compared to Q3 2013, but an increase of 12% when compared to Q2 2014. The massive increase in the telecommunications sector is a reflection of the continuing growth in sales of smartphones.

Photography: market suffering further decline
The photography market declined further in Q3 2014 with a drop in overall sales, which fell by 18%, compared to Q3 2013, and losing EGP 7 million.

Information technology: steady growth in the IT sector
The IT sector recorded a small drop of 1% in Q3 2014, compared to Q1 2014, generating almost EGP1 billion in turnover, but showed a significant increase of 30% when compared to Q3 2013. The mobile computing sector reported a 4% drop in value, compared to Q1 2014. This was due to the popularity of the mediatablets which increased by 113%, compared to Q3 2013 and increased by 12%, compared to Q1 2014. Finally, the monitors segment fell by 24%, compared to Q1 2014, with a total sales volume of EGP 46 million.

The trend of office equipment and consumables
The office equipment and consumables sector reported an increase of 39% for Q3 2014, compared to Q3 2013, with a sales volume of around EGP 46 million. The printers segment showed an increase of 30%, compared to Q1 2014, with a total of EGP 20 million. Also, multifunctional devices increased by 47%, compared to Q3 2013.
